For a Great Cooking Event, Host a Raclette Party!

When you're looking for a dinner party idea that is as easy as fondue, but slightly different, try hosting a raclette party.  All the host needs to do is supply the equipment and prepped cheese and vegetables. Then everyone can relax while their individual raclette pans cook. It couldn't get any easier!

Menu Themes for Raclette Parties

Almost anything goes with a raclette dinner party and after some short preparations before your guests arrive you can sit back, relax and enjoy the occasion. Using a raclette grill allows you to get back to enjoying simple and nutritious foods and appreciate the art of eating as much as the food. You can choose from a combination of fresh vegetables or indulge in fresh seafood. Some delicious suggestions for menu themes are:

  1. Classic Raclette -cheese selection (raclette, swiss, emmenthal, gruyere), ham, small onions, gherkins with boiled or baked potatoes.
  2. Vegetarian - cheese, potatoes, asparagus, capsicum, mushrooms.
  3. Pizza - mozzarella cheese, ham, pineapple, cherry tomatoes, pepperoni, mushrooms, onions, fresh oregano, serve with crusty bread
  4. Gourmet- prawns, smoked salmon, dill, avocado, creamy ricotta cheese sauce, served with crusty bread.

Other cheeses that are also perfectly suitable are Emmenthal, Gruyere, Jarlsberg,  Comte, Gouda, Swiss, Vintage or Tasty cheddar, Mozzarella.

Preparing and serving Raclette

  1. Boil the potatoes in their jackets.
  2. Line a basket or bowl with a napkin and wrap the hot potatoes in it to keep them warm.
  3. Cut the Raclette cheese into pan-sized slices and set them out on a dish.
  4. Put bowls of trimmings, a pepper mill and paprika on the table.

Drinks with Raclette

A dry white  wine or rosé goes best with Raclette, though a cool beer will do too. True connoisseurs recommend tea because it stimulates the digestion.

Before and After

You can serve seasonal salad as a starter and finish off with a fruit sorbet, fresh fruit or a fruit salad for dessert.

Handy Hints

Allow ½ - 1/3 pound of Raclette cheese and ½ pound of potatoes per person.
If you prefer, you can also serve crusty bread/baguette.
Do not cut off the rind: you'll get a crisp, flavorsome crust if you just scrape some of it away.
If any cheese is left over, wrap it in cling foil and it will keep for about 8 days.
When preparing Raclette in pans, make sure you don't overcook it, otherwise the albumin gets grainy and the fat separates.

Raclette can be prepared with any variety of vegetables, fruits, herbs, condiments, liqueurs and spices. Let your imagination go wild.
